Music Curriculum – Intent, Implementation and Impact

INTENT

At Freshsteps Independent School, our music curriculum is designed to be inclusive, therapeutic and aspirational, ensuring that all pupils, particularly those with Special Educational Needs (SEN), can access meaningful and enriching musical experiences. We recognise that music is a powerful tool for communication, emotional regulation and self-expression, and we intentionally use it to remove barriers to learning and engagement.

Our curriculum intends to develop the whole child, supporting not only musical skills but also well-being, resilience, determination, creativity and confidence. Music provides a structured yet flexible environment in which pupils can experience success, often for the first time, helping to rebuild positive attitudes towards education.

We aim to provide practical, hands-on learning experiences that prioritise participation and personal achievement over purely academic outcomes. Pupils are encouraged to compose, create and perform their own music, giving them ownership of their learning and enabling them to develop a strong sense of identity as musicians and performers. These opportunities are embedded into the curriculum and celebrated through school events and award ceremonies, where pupils proudly perform their original work.

The curriculum is designed to offer clear and accessible pathways to accreditation, including AQA Unit Awards and BTEC Music qualifications, allowing pupils to achieve recognised outcomes through personalised and incremental steps. These pathways are particularly impactful for SEN learners, as they break learning into manageable units, enabling consistent success and motivation.

Music is a central part of our wider performing arts culture, working closely with the drama curriculum to support performance, expression and storytelling. Pupils apply musical skills within drama through musical theatre, soundscapes and live performance, strengthening their confidence and ability to collaborate.

In line with the Arts Award framework, our intent is to support every young person to:

• Enjoy and actively participate in musical arts

• Engage with the wider arts and cultural world

• Develop creativity, communication and leadership skills

• Explore and define their own creative futures

We ensure that learning:

• Supports individual creative development

• Places pupils at the centre of their learning journey

• Increases exposure to artists, practitioners and cultural organisations

• Embraces new technologies and art forms

• Reaches the widest possible range of learners, particularly those with SEN

IMPLEMENTATION

The music curriculum at Freshsteps is implemented through a practical, adaptive and student-centred approach, carefully designed to meet the diverse needs of our pupils.

Teaching is rooted in active participation, with lessons focused on performing, composing and exploring music. Pupils regularly engage in songwriting and composition, developing the skills to create their own pieces of music. These compositions are not only assessed as part of their learning but are also performed at school events and award ceremonies, providing authentic purpose and audience, which significantly increases motivation and pride in their work.

Pupils take part in a range of musical activities including instrumental work, vocal performance, music technology, composition and improvisation. This practical approach ensures that pupils can access learning regardless of literacy or communication barriers, making music highly inclusive.

Learning is highly personalised, with pupils working towards AQA Unit Awards or BTEC qualifications depending on their needs and stage of development. AQA Unit Awards allow pupils to achieve in small, structured steps, building confidence and reinforcing success, while BTEC courses provide a more formal pathway for those ready to progress further.

Music is fully integrated within the school’s performing arts and drama curriculum, creating a cohesive and expressive learning environment. Pupils use music within drama to enhance storytelling, create atmosphere and support performance work. Opportunities such as musical theatre projects, collaborative performances and cross-curricular productions allow pupils to apply their musical skills in meaningful and engaging contexts.

The curriculum is enriched through participation in community and cultural projects, including involvement in the Windrush Programme in partnership with Enfield Council and Nexus. Through this project, pupils performed two gospel choir pieces and one dance music performance, giving them the opportunity to engage with culturally significant music, develop performance confidence and connect with the wider community. These experiences enhance pupils’ understanding of diversity, heritage and the social role of music.

The Arts Award is embedded within delivery, enabling pupils to explore a wide range of artistic experiences. Pupils participate in performances, study artists and organisations, and develop leadership skills through group work and peer support. Additional arts disciplines, including media, visual arts and storytelling, are incorporated where appropriate to broaden learning.

Teaching strategies are carefully adapted to support SEN learners. Staff use multi-sensory approaches, structured routines and clear scaffolding to ensure accessibility. Technology is used to reduce barriers, and opportunities for non-verbal expression are prioritised, ensuring all pupils can succeed.

Enrichment is a key feature of implementation. Pupils are exposed to a wide range of musical genres, cultures and styles, helping to build cultural capital. Regular opportunities to perform, both within school and in the community, ensure that pupils can celebrate their achievements and develop confidence.

IMPACT

The impact of the music curriculum at Freshsteps is significant and transformative, particularly for pupils with SEN, as it supports both academic development and personal growth.

Music has a profound impact on well-being, providing pupils with a safe and structured outlet for emotional expression. As a result, pupils demonstrate improved emotional regulation, reduced anxiety and increased engagement in school life. Pupils who may struggle in other areas often thrive in music, leading to improved confidence across the wider curriculum.

Pupils develop strong resilience and determination through composing, practising and performing their own music. The process of creating original pieces and preparing for performances, including award ceremonies, teaches pupils to persevere, refine their work and take pride in their achievements. This builds a strong sense of accomplishment and self-worth.

The curriculum has a clear impact on creativity and self-expression. Pupils confidently create and perform their own music, demonstrating individuality and imagination. For many SEN pupils, this provides a vital alternative means of communication, allowing them to express thoughts and emotions that may otherwise be difficult to articulate.

There is a measurable improvement in communication and social skills. Through collaborative work in music and drama, pupils develop the ability to listen, respond and work effectively with others. Group performances and shared creative projects foster teamwork and build positive peer relationships.

The integration of music within the drama curriculum significantly enhances pupils’ performance skills and contributes to a strong performing arts culture within the school. Pupils show increased confidence on stage, improved presentation skills and a deeper understanding of how music supports storytelling and emotional expression.

Participation in wider community opportunities with Enfield Council and Nexus, such as the Windrush Programme, has a lasting impact on pupils’ cultural awareness and sense of belonging. Performing gospel and dance music as part of this project enables pupils to connect with important cultural narratives while developing pride in their contributions to community events.

Achievement outcomes are meaningful and inclusive. Pupils gain recognised qualifications through AQA Unit Awards, BTEC and Arts Award, ensuring that all learners can demonstrate success. The step-by-step structure of these qualifications ensures continuous progress and sustained motivation.

Through engagement with music and the Arts Award, pupils develop a stronger understanding of the wider arts world and begin to see themselves as active participants within it. Leadership opportunities further support independence, confidence and aspiration.

Ultimately, the music curriculum ensures that pupils leave Freshsteps with:

• Improved well-being and emotional resilience

• Stronger determination and perseverance

• Developed creativity and self-expression

• Enhanced communication and social skills

• Recognised qualifications and achievements

• A meaningful connection to the arts, culture and community

Music plays a vital and transformative role in our school, empowering pupils to become confident, expressive and resilient individuals, fully prepared for their next steps in education and beyond.
